The short version
- A 68 x 24 in mat, 6 mm thick, made of PVC, weighing about 3 lb; printed alignment lines on a dark blue ("Ink") ground.
- $24.49 on Sep 30, 2026 for the Alignment Print (Ink) variation, shipped and sold by Amazon.com, 30-day refund or replacement shown.
- Gaiam tells you to unroll it and air it out for two to three days before first use because printed mats arrive with a strong smell. Plan for that.
The floor surface for the routine's floor moves and its cool-down.
Not something you eat or drink.
Handy under a foam roller or for an easy stretch, nothing more.
What the spec shows
We read the Amazon listing for the Alignment Print (Ink) variation (child ASIN B08DL5QV1T under the parent listing B00FLID5EO) and Gaiam's own product and care text for its Premium 6 mm print mats on Sep 30, 2026. Where the two disagree, we say so.
| Spec | Value | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 68 x 24 in | A standard yoga-mat footprint. 68 in is 5 ft 8 in, so anyone taller will have head or feet past the end when lying flat; Gaiam sells a longer, wider 78 x 26 in version separately. |
| Thickness | 6 mm (listed as 0.23 in) | Thicker than the 3 to 5 mm mats common in studios. More padding under knees and hips, slightly softer footing for standing balance work. |
| Weight | 3.1 to 3.26 lb | The listing's bullet says 3.26 lb and its spec table says 3.1 lb. Either way it is about 1.4 to 1.5 kg, light enough to carry rolled. |
| Material | PVC | Polyvinyl chloride. Gaiam's own page for this mat line says "PVC. Latex-Free." |
| Plasticizers | "6P free" (brand wording) | The listing says the mat is free of six phthalates: DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIDP and DNOP. This is the brand's own description, not a third-party mark (see below). |
| Surface | Textured, printed | A "sticky" textured top with printed alignment lines meant to give you a consistent place to put hands and feet. |
| Care | Spot clean, dry flat | Damp cloth, cold water, mild detergent; dry flat; keep out of prolonged sun; store rolled in a bag (all per Gaiam). |
| Model | GA64015 | Listed on Amazon as "Gaiam Alignment Yoga Mat, 6mm, Ink". The listing's warranty field says only "Manufacturer"; Gaiam's own site describes a lifetime mat guarantee, which we did not test. |
How it holds up in use
A mat has no evidence base of its own; it is a surface. What the evidence does support is doing the floor work in the first place. The U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines ask adults for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week plus muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days [1]. Push-ups, glute bridges, planks and a proper cool-down are all floor moves, and a mat is simply what makes doing them on a hard floor tolerable enough to repeat.
On the build: PVC is the most common mat material for a reason. It is cheap, grippy when dry and keeps its shape. Gaiam's care text is honest about the trade-offs: the mat can fade and turn brittle if left in the sun for long stretches, and it should be spot-cleaned and dried flat rather than soaked [2]. The 6 mm thickness is on the cushioned end of Gaiam's range. In our reading of the spec that is the right call for a home routine heavy on kneeling and lying moves; people who want firmer footing for standing balance work usually go thinner.
The "6P free" phrase deserves a plain explanation. Phthalates are chemicals used to make plastics such as PVC softer and more pliable [3]. Gaiam's listing names six that this mat is made without. For context, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission restricts eight phthalates in children's toys and child care articles (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIBP, DPENP, DHEXP and DCHP) [3]. Four of Gaiam's six are on that list; DIDP and DNOP are not, and four of the CPSC's eight are not in Gaiam's six. So "6P free" is a manufacturer's statement about its own formulation. We found no independent certification directory for it, and an exercise mat is not a children's product covered by that rule anyway. Read it as useful information, not a seal.
Two practical notes from Gaiam's own text. First, the smell: printed mats "release a very strong but harmless odor when first unwrapped," and the brand asks you to unroll the mat and air it out for two to three days before use [2]. Second, the listing notes the packaging has changed between "5mm" and "6mm" labels at times while the mat itself stayed the same size and style. If the box says one and the listing says the other, that is why.
This is a PVC mat, and the brand's site says it is latex-free. It is not a natural-rubber or cork mat, and it is not a thick cushioned "exercise mat" of the 10 to 15 mm kind. If you want a heavily padded surface for high-impact floor work, or you prefer to avoid PVC altogether, this is the wrong product. The B00FLID5EO listing is a parent with two dozen print variations; the price and photo here are for the Alignment Print (Ink) only.
How to fit it into a simple week
This is a sequence for getting a new mat into use, not a promise about what will happen once it is there.
Air it out first
Unroll it somewhere ventilated for two to three days, as Gaiam asks, before the first session. Do not start the week on a mat that still smells like its wrapper.
Put it where the routine happens
Roll it and stand it in the corner of the room where you actually do the 20-minute routine. A mat in a closet gets used less than a mat you trip over.
Use it for the floor blocks only
Warm up and the standing parts of the strength block do not need it. Lay it out for the kneeling and lying moves and for the three-minute cool-down; that is where the 6 mm matters.
Wipe it down once a week
A damp cloth with cold water and a little mild detergent, then dry flat. Roll it print-side out so the corners stop curling, and keep it out of a sunny window.
Price and where it is sold
On Sep 30, 2026 the Alignment Print (Ink) variation was $24.49 on Amazon, shipped from and sold by Amazon.com, with "FREE 30-day refund/replacement" shown on the listing (listing). The same day, Gaiam's own store listed comparable Premium 6 mm print mats at $34.98, so Amazon was the cheaper of the two places we looked. Other prints in the same listing carried different prices. The reversible version of this mat is a separate listing ("Premium 6mm Print Reversible") whose prints were priced differently from each other; we did not price it for this entry. Prices move; the figures above are what we saw on that date only.
Who should look elsewhere
- Anyone who wants to avoid PVC, or wants a natural-rubber, cork or TPE mat, should look at a different line. Gaiam's 6 mm collection page marks most of its mats latex-free but the materials vary by model.
- People taller than about 5 ft 8 in who want to lie fully on the mat, or who want more width, should look at Gaiam's longer and wider 6 mm version rather than this 68 x 24 in size.
- Anyone who wants a two-sided print should look at the reversible Premium 6 mm listing instead; it is a different product with its own prints and price.
- If you need a heavily padded surface (10 mm or more) for high-impact floor work, a 6 mm yoga mat is the wrong category.
- Anyone starting a new floor routine with an existing condition or after time away from exercise should check with a clinician first; the mat does not change that.
